Phuket International Airport has reached its expansion limits as one of Southeast Asia's busiest airports, burdened by a single 3,600-metre runway and constrained terminal facilities. The Andaman International Airport, costing approximately USD 1.8 billion, is being constructed in Khok Kloi Subdistrict, Takua Thung District, Phang Nga Province. The construction process is projected to take about seven years, with three years dedicated to research and development and four years for construction, aiming for operational status by 2031. It is anticipated that the new airport will increase tourist arrivals to the Andaman region by at least 15 million per year. Concurrently, development projects at Phuket International Airport (Phase 2) and Krabi International Airport are also underway.

The airport will feature a runway of up to 4,000 metres, which will enable it to handle large widebody aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380. This expansion is expected to boost international traffic significantly, increasing the international passenger share to 70-75%. Major airlines, including Thai AirAsia, have already expressed strong interest in operating flights from the new Phang-nga Airport, which is only 60 kilometres from Phuket International Airport, presenting a viable solution to the congestion at the latter. Other airlines like Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways are also likely to expand their services to this new gateway.

With high tourist demand, the Andaman International Airport's development represents a crucial piece of infrastructure for supporting the region's continued growth, contributing to what is being termed the "Andaman Triangle." Prime Minister Strettha Thavisin has pledged to expedite the airport's development, with the goal of opening by 2027. However, the ownership structure—whether public or private—will play a significant role in determining the airport's management, fees, and policies.
